Lovable's preview shows:

preview has not been built yet. either your project has an error
or the preview is currently being built.

The message itself names two possibilities — your project has an error, or a build is in progress. Neither means the project is gone.

0. Delete nothing yet

This is the most important step. Seeing this screen and concluding the project is lost, then deleting or remixing it, cannot be undone.

  • Confirm the project still appears in your dashboard
  • Save the project URL somewhere

1. The official recovery order [official]

Lovable's documentation prescribes this sequence when a build error appears:

  1. Click Try to fix — it appears on the activity card. Lovable scans the logs, finds the issue and attempts a fix. It does not use credits
  2. Ask Lovable to investigate — describe what you see and what you expected. Lovable can inspect errors, logs and console output, and test your app in a browser
  3. Roll back — use version history to return to the version just before the issue appeared, then retry with a clearer, more specific prompt
  4. Switch to Plan mode — have Lovable outline an approach first, review and adjust it, then build step by step

Note: that sequence is the official guidance for build errors in general. The exact string preview has not been built yet is not covered in the official documentation.

2. Do not confuse preview with published [official]

Lovable treats editor preview, version history and published state separately.

A published URL still serving an old build does not prove your source is intact, and an empty preview does not prove it is gone. Compare the two side by side to tell which one is actually broken.

3. If GitHub is connected [official]

Lovable's GitHub documentation states that renaming, moving or deleting the connected repository breaks sync. If you connected one, verify the repository still has its original owner, name and location, and that sync is still producing commits.

4. A workaround reported by users [community report · unconfirmed]

Another user with the same symptom reported that hard-refreshing the editor and opening Visual Edit once forced the preview to work again.

This is not an official fix. The original reporter never published a final resolution; one other affected user said it worked for them. Treat it as something to try after steps 1–3, not before.

Verifying

You are back to normal when the preview opens the current version and a deliberate small test change shows up in the preview without losing history.

If it still will not build

If the project exists in your dashboard but the preview never rebuilds, stop remixing and send support:

  • the project URL
  • the failing preview URL
  • the timestamp
  • the last known working version
